The topic of data visualization frequently comes up in our conversations. A really well thought out display of data can make the patterns in very complex data sets immediately apparent. A name that came up at last week’s meeting was Hans Rosling. Hans has done a lot of work on presenting very large and very complex data sets. Some of his talks can be accessed through TED https://www.ted.com/speakers/hans_rosling.html
All his talks are interesting but “the best stats you’ve ever seen” and “new insights on poverty” are great illustrations of the power of the visual display of quantitative information – which is, incidentally, the title of Edward Tufte’s must-read book on how to draw good figures to display quantitative data.
