“If you’re typing from a digital tape then you don’t know [what you have missed] or there’s been so much noise that something hasn’t been recorded.” Stenographers are few in number but high in skill. They record every word spoken during court proceedings using a phonetic-based language, a skill that takes years to perfect. Stenographers are capable of recording up to 300 words per minute and work in 20-minute shifts in courtrooms.
